The Mixtape // 05.11.18

It’s been a week of beautiful weather here in New York. We celebrated with a picnic dinner by the Hudson River on Wednesday night, and I’m not sure many things come closer to perfection than that. Jameson has since asked to have a picnic every day.

Here are some photos and a few links worth sharing from the week…Gotta love fried chicken at a picnic. And Manchego cheese with Ritz crackers. And random conversation topics with a three-year-old.

This is what NYC dreams are made of…

I recently finished reading Behold The Dreamers, and I can’t help but identify with the protagonist who lives in Harlem and is described this way: “But then the spring came, and his dreams of Phoenix evaporated like the dew in Marcus Garvey Park. He couldn’t imagine a city more beautiful, more delightful, more perfect for him than New York. Once the temperature rose about fifty-five, it was as if the city had awakened from a deep slumber and the buildings and trees and statues were singing as one.” AMEN.

If you’re still in need of a Mother’s Day gift idea, pulling together a last-minute box with items from the grocery store would be great.

In case you’re living under a rock and haven’t seen Childish Gambino’s video for his song “This is America,” here you go. A caution that it’s disturbing and mesmerizing (and not suitable for children) all at the same time. But it’s also artistic genius and packed with incredibly powerful messages.

And on the topic of race issues in America, Why Richard Wright Hated Zora Neale Hurston, is a really interesting article about how racism affected black literature and black literature affected black romantic relationships.

Finally, with the weather warming up, I’ve got summer on my mind. One of you who doesn’t have a post-baby body and does have some extra cash should totally buy this bathing suit. Can we also celebrate the fact that we can see the Mara Hoffman models’ stretch marks?! Hooray for realness.
