In Search of Blossoms

It’s been nearly six years since I moved from Washington, D.C. to New York City, and I still think back to my time living in The District with a lot of fondness. I miss people who live there, I miss Saturday morning walks to Eastern Market for breakfast, and I miss colorfully-painted row houses. And one of the things I miss the most is seeing the annual blooming of the cherry blossom trees at the Tidal Basin. Some of my favorite memories from living in D.C. involve getting off from work downtown, walking down to the Tidal Basin to meet up with friends during peak blossom season, and then having a picnic under the rows of cherry blossoms. It’s like sitting under fluffy, light pink clouds, and it’s pretty darn magical.

The nice thing about leaving a city you love to move to NYC is that NYC has a lot to offer, and almost always a version of whatever it was you loved in your previous city. I knew NYC had plenty of cherry blossom trees — I just hadn’t quite nailed down exactly where they were. So this past Sunday, I set off on a journey in search of blossom trees.

Jordan, the boys, and our friends Heather and Aswan, were up for the journey (or perhaps tricked into it?) and brought their two youngest kids along. We walked down 5th Avenue, along Central Park, until we hit the jackpot.
