Last weekend we hosted a Book Worm Brunch for the boy who looooves to read and turned five!

Surrounded by love, lots of new books to add to his library, words of affirmation (“what I love about Josiah is…”), worm bookmarks and glasses for his beloved guests, and multiple servings of his made-to-order cake. The sweetest day.

I recently heard a quote that I can’t get out of my head:

Walking under the cherry blossoms, I couldn’t help but think of how for months, these same trees appeared to be “doing nothing,” waiting dormant. And now with the arrival of spring, we see that something very important was in fact happening.

Now we bask in the fruit and beauty, growth and wonder, birthed by the stillness and waiting.

It’s hard to capture the impact these two have had on me and @jordanlrice. But if you’ve been around Renaissance Church or had an up-close view of our marriage, you’ve experienced the fruit of their journey, wisdom, and labor. And I know many of you have been impacted by Emotionally Healthy Spirituality @ehdiscipleship in your own way.

Such a joy to have Geri and Pete surprise us with a visit at church yesterday. And such gratitude for the work God has done through them, both in our lives and others around the world. ❤️

An appreciation post:

For this city called New York that is full of its delights, like a restaurant that brings Tulum to you, without the need for a flight. For its people and their ideas and style and attitude, which I find to be the most interesting in the world. (Shout out to close dining tables for people watching and inevitable ear hustlin’.) For skyscrapers, art installations, Broadways shows, and parks that make me ponder what things I might be able to dream up and create. For its noise and grind, which drive me to seek after daily silence and solitude.

But most of all, for this guy. He’s the one who gave me reason to move here a decade ago. And he’s the one who makes it a place I love to call home.

Our 9th annual friends trip is in the books, and my gratitude and love for these people deepens with each passing year. As someone who is known to plan out my trips with detailed itineraries, full of things to eat, see, and do, this trip is the only one I arrive at with no plan other than to sit around a table, listen, laugh, cry, be known, and be loved. And the time inevitably flies by.

Been rockin’ with these people for 20+ years, and this photo is 4L personified.

(My friends in this photo will have the deepest appreciation for how ridiculous it is that I’m using a current internet acronym. 🙃)

You may have forgotten — or never known — that we have “a family dog.” Which is to say, my brother @jrice914 and sis @jasminerice1 have a dog who lives with them in New Rochelle, and I claim it as a family dog so that my kids will stop asking if we can get a dog that will live with us in Harlem. Jameson proudly talks about our family dog to his classmates at school and even included her on his “what I’m thankful for” list for Thanksgiving. 😂

And I mean, look at her. She’s too cute for anyone to not want to claim her as their own. 🥹

The tradition continues… our annual visit to NYBG for the Holiday Train Show. Complete with trying to convince our kids not to climb over barriers and pull the trains off the tracks. 🙃

We were supposed to spend this week in Jamaica, but the massive backup of canceled flights put a stop to those plans, when our Monday flight was canceled too. 😩

It was disappointing to not visit the family (or beaches) that were waiting for us. But if there’s anything 2020 taught me, it’s how to adjust and “pivot.” Things didn’t look the way we hoped, but there has still been so much to be thankful for. The comforts of home, filled with new toys. Our health and safety. And time spent with these dear friends who visited NYC. @mikekelsey and @ashjkelsey — two of my oldest friends and favorites.

I kept looking at all of our kids together and thinking, “is this real?” One gift of having 20+ year friendships is to see the sovereign hand of God in your lives and know the story rarely goes the way we think it will, but it’s no less beautiful, and it’s often transformative.

In the end, there’s always the option of staying fixated on what could have been. But I’m so glad we chose to soak up all of the goodness right in front of us. ✨

Sonshine on a Friday.☀️

No matter how sleep deprived I might be (and make no mistake, ya girl is riding the struggle bus), morning walks to school with this guy are some of my favorite moments.

He talks about 57 different things (today’s topics included hot tubs, Power Rangers, volcanoes, and a Wakanda style of keeping himself warm 🤣). We watch our city buzz to life. We greet our beloved crossing guards. We rush to make it on time. And he still chooses to hold my hand for most of the way. 🥹
