Father’s Day

June 20, 2016

On Sunday, after being away from home for the past week, Jordan could not wait to be reunited with Jameson.

As Jordan and I made our final descent on a flight coming from Memphis, where we’d been for a wedding, Jordan’s anticipation was pretty palpable. He was doing everything to make sure we’d get to church, where Jameson was, as fast as possible — like asking if I wanted to take a bathroom break on the plane, so that we wouldn’t waste time in the terminal.

As our cab pulled up to church, Jordan jumped out, grabbed his bag and headed through the doors of the elementary school where we hold our services. I struggled to keep up, awkwardly pulling my rolling bag up over steps and down the hallway to where the nursery is. Jordan was nearly disappearing around the corner as I trailed him as fast as I could.

I made it to within five feet of the nursery door, which was just close enough to see Jordan slip into the door, call Jameson’s name, and to hear Jameson shout, “DA DA!”

That interaction of calling Jordan “Da Da,” with such confidence and excitement, was totally unexpected and far better than any other gift I could have given Jordan on Father’s Day (although I did try to get him swaggy with a couple new shirts).

And Jordan is so deserving of celebration as a dad. He loves Jameson fiercely. Some of my happiest moments are seeing them interact together, as Jordan gives Jameson his breakfast in the morning or rolls around on the floor with him after rushing home from work. How he prays over Jameson at night and daydreams about the father-son lessons he’ll teach him as he gets older. And how he believes loving God and me well is one of the very best ways he’ll lead by example.

Our little family loves our “Da Da.”

Here are a few of my favorite photos of Jordan and Jameson together.
