Labor Day

September 6, 2016

Boy, I love a three-day weekend. And this past Labor Day weekend was no exception. After non-stop weather reports of gloomy tropical storm weather, we were surprised with beautiful, sunny skies — which were perfect for spending time outside and enjoying some rest.

Labor Day, itself, started off with cooking pancakes and bacon for breakfast, and then Jordan took Jameson to the nearby playground, where Jameson could run around as Jordan shot hoops. And run around Jameson did. Back and forth, back and forth. Jordan said at one point, he had run so much, he stopped and leaned back on a park bench, recollecting himself. They came home for lunch, and Jameson fell asleep in his high chair, slouched over a PB&J sandwich.

After Jameson’s nap and some lazying around the house, we decided the unofficial end of summer (I have strong feelings about this, as I explained here) required us to treat ourselves to some cereal milk soft serve from Momofuku Milk Bar on the Upper West Side. Man, that stuff is good! And I’m on track to hit my goal of five ice cream servings before September 20 (two more to go.) :-)

From there, it was a quick walk over to Central Park, which was full of people biking and others chasing after balls and others sprawled out on blankets. We walked and drew deep breaths to take in all of the goodness, commenting to each other how crazy it would be to see Jameson riding his bike in this famous park one day.

I often say, you could take a different set of paths everyday for a year and still be discovering new little patches of the park. Want a zoo? Got that. Want a gondola ride? Got that. Statues and fountains? Got that. Remote-controlled model sail boats? Yup. A medieval-looking castle? Got that too!

That look Jameson has is him plotting how he can get away from me.

And that face of mine is me barely holding on to him as he attempted to leap from my arms.

The wide open spaces in Central Park also seem perfectly made for the little person who has recently learned to run and wants nothing more than to try out his new skill.

Jameson loves to discover acorns and leaves and sticks. I love this photo of him deciding to share one of his treasures with Daddy.

It wasn’t long after this that we started heading home, and I was left reflecting on how holiday weekends can be full of fun activity. But sometimes, a long weekend provides for days when you don’t do much at all. And these simple days can sometimes be the nicest and sweetest of all.
