A Visit to Color Factory

September 14, 2018

Have you heard about the Color Factory pop-up exhibition here in NYC? I happened to stumble across news of its debut while looking for unique date ideas for me and Jordan.

Color Factory NYCHere’s a little bit about Color Factory from their website:

Color Factory is a collaborative interactive exhibit that debuted in San Francisco in August 2017. What was intended as a month-long run unexpectedly flourished as a celebration of color and creativity that lasted for another eight sold-out months.

This August, a whole new palette is coming to New York City in SoHo’s Hudson Square neighborhood. In 20,000 square feet, we will feature brand-new participatory installations of colors we’ve collected around the city— hues that invite curiosity, discovery and play. Some of our favorite artists, creatives, designers and makers are teaming up with us to tell their unique color stories and engage all of your senses in unexpected ways.

Color Factory is perhaps exactly what you’d imagine — a big exhibit dedicated to celebrating color. But at the same time, it’s perhaps more than what you’d imagine — it’s filled with interactive activities and delights that create a memorable experience.

Here are some things to know if you’re interested in visiting Color Factory:

  • Tickets cost $38, which honestly made me hesitate and think, “Is it really worth it?” I will say that there are lots of little treats and fun experiences along the way, so I did leave feeling it was worth it.
  • When you first enter the exhibit, you register on an iPad, and you’re given a card that’s connected to your email address. There are cameras set up in the various rooms, and if you want a picture taken of you or your group, you scan your card near the camera, it takes your photo, and the photo is sent directly to your email address for free. So brilliant! No need to capture pics with your phone or personal camera (although they are allowed) – you can just take it all in.
  • You purchase tickets for a designated time on a particular day. If you can manage going on a weekday (like we did), I’d assume you’ll deal with fewer crowds and have an even better experience. While the entrance times are on every hour, you won’t be rushed through the exhibit.
  • A lot of people think the exhibit is geared toward kids–and it certainly would be fun for kids–but it’s also really great to make this a trip just for the adults. It made us feel like kids again.

Here are some of our favorite pics and videos from the day, which are meant to be a tease, because one of the best parts about this exhibit is not really knowing what comes next!

As a girl who loves her neutral color palettes, I have to admit there’s just something about color that stimulates joy.
